Install XFCE Desktop in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise

Xfce is a very lightweight and popular desktop environment, it’s the default on Xubuntu. It aims to be fast and low on system resources, while still being visually appealing and user friendly.

This simple tutorial will show you how to install Xfce desktop environment in Ubuntu 12.04 which also works for other Ubuntu editions.

To install Xfce desktop environment, hit Ctrl+Alt+T to launch a terminal window, then copy and paste this command into terminal and hit enter:

sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

This command will install both Xfce and Xubuntu session.

  • Xubuntu is basically Ubuntu’s implementation of Xfce, with the appropriate Ubuntu-specific artwork and defaults.
  • Instead, if you want the default Xfce desktop without the Ubuntu-specific artwork, choose xfce session.

(Optional) To remove Xfce, launch terminal from the dash home and run this command:
