Install HandBrake in Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal

HandBrake is a multi-threaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper and converter. It can encode directly from DVDs (even encrypted ones) or from VIDEO_TS folders. AC3, LPCM, and MPEG audio tracks are supported.

At the moment of writing this tutorial, HandBrake Releases PPA hasn’t updated with Ubuntu 12.10 support. So I’m going to show you how to install HandBrake 0.9.8 from

To get started:

Now, HandBrake Releases PPA has updated for Ubuntu 12.10. You can add ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases ppa repository to Software Sources -> Other Software tab, then update and install handbrake. Or run following commands in terminal (Hit Ctrl+Alt+T) to add the ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases

Finally update:

sudo apt-get update

and install:

sudo apt-get install handbrake-gtk

Once installed, search for and open handbrake from the Unity dash.

  1. DeBugMan says:

    Does not work, giving

Package handbrake is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package ‘handbrake’ has no installation candidate

That’s the second time I am trying a PPA since Ubuntu 12.10 and that fails, possibly the dist-upgrade that messed up something. But not worth downgrading to 12.04 or reinstalling, really!

      oops, my bad.

It should be handbrake-gtk (there’s also command line tool handbrake-cli). Use this command instead:

      sudo apt-get install handbrake-gtk

Do you know of a way i could download the file to my phone and then install it on my computer from there? I have unlimited 3g but no internet connection for my computers where i live… I’m thinking there’s got to be a way , sorry if this isn’t the proper thread to ask on but handbrake is the only program i want that I’d rather not wait till i go to a cafe to get… I live in the middle of nowhere lol thank you regardless. I’m using12.10 btw

(not sure if this is a good question or a really dumb one)
