How to Install VNC server in Ubuntu 12.04

This simple and brief tutorial is going to show you how to install and setup tightvnc server in Ubuntu 12.04. With TightVNC, you can see the desktop of a remote machine and control it with your local mouse and keyboard, just like you would do it sitting in the front of that computer.

First of all, launch a terminal window from the dash or press Ctrl+Alt+T.

Copy and paste this command into terminal and hit enter to install tightvnc server:

sudo apt-get install tightvncserver

After installed the vnc server, start a session and set the password by this command:

vncserver -geometry widthxheight

For example, remote machine is running on 1366×768 display resolution.

vncserver -geometry 1366x768

Now, you can connect to this vnc session from remote using a vnc client. You can download tightvnc viewer

In vnc server area input ip or hostname:1

(Optional) To kill this vnc session, run command in server:

vncserver -kill :1
