The default purple splash screen at Ubuntu boot up and shutdown is called “plymouth”. This simple and brief tutorial is going to show you how to install and change the plymouth theme in Ubuntu.
All work will be done in a terminal window with commands. If you want a GUI tool, go to the end and install Super Boot Manager integrated with plymouth manager.
Install and change Plymouth Themes in Ubuntu:
There are some plymouth themes available in Ubuntu Software Center, just search for
plymouth-theme and install them.
Hit Ctrl+Alt+T to open up a terminal window, run this command to list installed themes and type in selection number to change the default.
sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth
Finally, apply changes with this commands:
sudo update-initramfs -u
Install & change Plymouth themes using plymouth manager GUI:
Super-Boot-Manger is a simple gui created with buc, the interface has the main purpose to make easer and intuitive configuration of Grub, Burg (Brand-new Universal loadeR from GRUB) and Plymouth. It allows to enable/disable plymouth, install & change plymouth themes.
To install super boot manager, run following 3 commands in terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ingalex/super-boot-manager sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install super-boot-manager
